Welcome to the Tri-County Fly Fishers Website.
Tri-County Fly Fishers, Inc. is a not for profit Club whose members have a true love for fly-fishing. We welcome anyone who wants to learn how to fly fish and gain experience in the art of fly tying; and become an active member of the fly-fishing Club.
This Club is made up of about eighty members from beginners to those with 50+ years of fly-fishing and tying experi-ence. Fishing interests range from bluegills and bass to redfish and tarpon, with an occasional rainbow or brown trout from up north or out west thrown in. Today, membership is drawn from permanent and seasonal residents of those in and around the Florida counties of Lake, Sumter and Marion.

November 2019 Presidents Message

Welcome and thanks to all members who have chosen to be part of the Tri -County Fly Fishers Club. I’d like to welcome back those snowbirds that are slowly trickling back in the Club meetings. It won’t be long before we have a “full house” membership at our meetings, listening to exaggerated fishing exploits once again. I suggest you all roll up your pant legs and wear boots to the next few meetings because “it” can get pretty deep at times if you know what I mean! Please get you renewal membership into to Bob Levin by the February 19 evening meeting. Thanks. Speaking of membership, I am proud to say that today our Club is as strong as it has ever been. Our focus this year was not only on catching fish but also on education, conservation and community outreach and as of last count we are up to 95 members. Wow!

Officer elections for 2020 - 2022 and Board Member appointees are currently taking place. Be sure to fill out your voting ballot at the next evening meeting and look for an email outlining the same. The officers and board members will be announced at the December breakfast meeting. Barry Palmer, heads up the nominating committee along with Russ Kucinski and Art Palmer. They have been very busy gathering candidates for this important election in accordance with the Club By-Laws. This is your Club; please get your votes in by November 20, 2019.

That’s all for now. For a detailed run down as to what’s happening visit the Club calendar page and blog for registration, additional information or updates on upcoming events, trips and outings.

As always, if you have any ideas, would like to join a committee, or have speakers or programs in mind, please bring it to my or any board member's attention.

In the meantime...go fish!

Larry

A Letter From Lefty

I received this letter via email yesterday from a blog I subscribe to and thought I would share this with you all. I had the opportunity to meet Lefty at the Renzetti Expo in 2015. This was truly one of the highlights of my fly fishing career! Certainly a legendary "giant in our sport" not to mention a really great guy!

 To my friends,

I was 92 in January and had a carotid artery operation. During testing the hospital determined my heart was only pumping 35% and must limit my physical activities followed by a rest. The industry was extremely helpful and last season was able to attend the shows, clinics, etc.

Several weeks ago, I realized I was developing ...

Tuckasegee River North Carolina Float Trip Raffles

Tuckasegee River North Carolina Float Trip Raffles

We will be raffling off 2 full-day guided fly fishing float trips (a $400.00 value & includes lunch & beverages) donated to the Club by Jason from Hookers Fly Shop out of Sylva, NC. Tickets are $5.00 each. We will begin selling the tickets September 4, 2019 and will draw the winners at the February 19, 2020 evening meeting. The winners will then contact Jason and book their dates in April or May.

The Tuckasegee, known as the “Tuck,” originates around Cashiers and runs through Sylva, Dillsboro and Bryson City on its way to Fontana Lake. The river is dotted with stone fishing weirs built by Native Americans; this practice may have preceded the Cherokee in the area. The weirs are most easily viewed when water levels are low.

A float trip on the Tuck is an exhilarating way to experience fly fishing in the Southern Appalachians. The river has areas that are as wide as many western rivers, offering plenty of room for back casting. The popular Delayed Harvest section is approximately five miles long and located between the small towns of Dillsboro and Sylvia North Carolina. It is heavily stocked by the state with brown, rainbow and brook trout.

November 2015 Presidents Message

“Do you keep them?” Invariably, that is the question I’m asked when I tell people that I fly-fish. “No, I like to practice catch and release” is my usual response. With a puzzled look on their face, the follow up question…here it comes…“Well, if you’re not going to keep and eat them, why...
